A productive round review should reduce uncertainty. If it leaves you with twelve problems and no priority, it has failed.
Step one: record the emotional version
Before opening the scorecard, write one sentence describing how the round felt and what you believe decided it. This matters because memory influences practice. Capturing that belief allows you to compare it with the evidence instead of unconsciously rewriting the round later.
Keep the sentence honest but neutral: ‘I felt as though poor driving ruined the front nine’ is more useful than ‘my swing disappeared.’
Step two: identify demonstrated costs
Review penalties, forced recoveries, repeated attempts, three-putts and the holes where the plan left no manageable next shot. Attribute only what the record supports. Do not infer a mechanical swing fault from a directional miss.
Group similar events by reason and part of the game. This turns eighteen separate stories into a few possible patterns.
- What worked well enough to protect the score?
- Where were strokes explicitly added?
- Which event repeated?
- Was the decision or the execution responsible?
- What remains uncertain after one round?
Step three: rank, do not list
Choose the principal cost by repeated evidenced impact. Then identify one quick decision improvement separately if one exists. The golfer should leave with a hierarchy, not a catalogue of imperfections.
Preserve what worked. If driving created playable approaches all day, say so explicitly. Improvement accelerates when a golfer knows what does not need changing.
Step four: define the next-round test
Turn the conclusion into a behaviour that can be observed. ‘Improve approaches’ is too broad. ‘From 130–160 yards, choose the club that covers the front edge and record whether the strike finishes short’ can be tested.
The next round is not a final examination. It is another piece of evidence. Confirm, weaken or replace the initial diagnosis as the pattern develops.
Describe the feeling, find demonstrated costs, rank one priority and carry one observable test into the next round.
